Arapaho Memories

by Paula LeKatz

I hear people crying in this place
We asked our white brothers to allow us one last gathering
They promised
We camped
Our young men went to hunt
They killed us
Our old people
Our children
And the women
We pleaded and prayed for mercy
It did not come
Mother Earth cried
