"I'm Tired of Talking About Racism"

      by Robin Hasslen

"I'm TIRED of talking about racism!"
              Rarely uttered with bold confidence
but subtly spelled out across faces,
                    through body postures
                    and exchanged glances
                          among blue-eyed students
                                of white privilege.

        Time's up! Class is over.
Stride away from the discomforting discussion.
Saunter into you world of whiteness
                    where oblivion denies oppression
                          and privilege affords security.

        Dine out! Expect attentive service
              with respectful smiles.
Shop leisurely with Daddy's money. Expect Security
              to protect/not suspect you
                    of illegal or "gang" activity.

Rest in peace, you blue-eyed students
              of white privilege.
Dream of the institutions which empower you.
              Racism isn't your problem.
                    Privilege is.

Use that privilege -- not for power
                    but for justice.
              Not to cry "Reverse discrimination"
but to admit and address inequalities.
Not to accept the status quo and stereotypes of your fathers
but to honestly educate your daughters and sons.
Not to mumble, "I'm tired of talking about racism"
but to accept your responsibility for its dismantling.

        Yesterday was evil, inhumane, ungodly.
Today is a pretense of progress from that evil humanity.
Tomorrow is all we have . . .
