I Am

      by Paula LeKatz

          It breaks my heart
When Indian people see my white skin
And fail to see my Indian soul

          I am Arapaho and white
I am a bird without wings
          Owl is my clan

My soul cries between two worlds
My college degrees hang on the wall
My feet pray as I dance at Pow Wows

          My people hold me up
My Spirit cries to the Creator
          My Indianness is

          Niancon - Creator Spirit
Bring me safely across yellow waters to you
My Indian name will allow me to enter your abode
