mother africa

      by Anthony Vigil

stone-smoothe ebony is our skin and the dark thrush and
whirl of the tigris and euphrates. this and the history
of our black brothers and sisters incites the sun to
burn, carves out the western moon from the sable
heavens, and transforms blood into liquid fire.

books and politicians cannot sand down the stone-smoothe
ebony--the hand carved history scribed on our skin and
          in our hearts and eyes.

chemicals and dams cannot usurp the black tides of the
          motherland's veins.

brothers and sisters, i see the west moon in your eyes,
the rivers torrenting in your blood and the promise of
kings, queens, and prophets in your souls.

burn on sweating sun. shine on stone-smoothe ebony skin
          and hearts.
