Devil's Tower: the Rock Tree
      of the Kiowa

      by Pam Kalar

          Sun browned children
          play at prairie's door.

          Boy stops, struck dumb,

          scared, changes.

          Fingers now claws

          body matted with fur.

          Bear blinks at

          setting sun.

          Girls fly in terror,

          bear chases.

          Tree stump speaks

          climb on for safety.

          Stump grows to

          meet sheltering sky.

          Bear shakes tree

          claws score bark,

          Tosses girls to

          waiting heavens.

          Seven sisters live

          Bright in night sky.
